Two reminders:

1) Please send students with raincoats/umbrellas in case they are sent outside for recess and it is drizzling.
2) Please return Yesh Lanu Llama books ASAP

Thursday June 14, 2012

Well the school year is winding down, but in grade 2 we seem to just be getting busier and busier.
On Tuesday we had our Synagogue Hop field trip that was an amazing success.  Thank you to all of the parent volunteers who joined us for our special day.

Today we had two visitors.  Wendy, from the Bat Conservation Society of Canada, came and spoke to us about bats.  She showed us slides, a short film, we got to use a echo locator device and she introduced us to Norman.  Norman is a large brown bat that lives at the Conservation Society.  Students were excited to see a real live bat up close.  Thanks Wendy !
This afternoon we had a visitor from Petland Pet Store show us some cool animals.  Students saw birds, got to hold a tarantula, bearded dragons, frogs and many more animals.  Thanks Petland !
A big thank you to Mrs. Aucion who organized all of our visitors today.

As we start to wind down, Morah Tammy in the library would like to remind students to bring back library books that they have signed out.  Along with this, any students who have not yet returned your Yesh Lanu Llama #2 reading book, please do so.

Friday June 8, 2012

Today we had our first rehearsal with the grade 5s in preparation for monday evening's grade 9 graduation.
Here are a few things to remember:
1) please wear your formal uniform
2) please arrive by 7: 15 sharp !
3) please meet Mrs. Gersten on the couches near the small chapel at the far end of the shul from the main entrance.
Enjoy your weekend. Shabbat shalom

Songs for Grade 9's Graduation

Students have asked me to post the songs that we will be singing next Monday night at the Grade 9's graduation.
Here are the lyrics for the first song:
Here is a link to a Youtube video performance of this song:

Here is the second song that we will be performing:

Tuesday June 5, 2012

Today we started our in depth discussions of t'filah (prayers). Some of the questions we covered were: What is t'filah? Why is T'filah important? What types of things to we pray for? As part of our discussions, I showed the classes some of the siddurim that I have. I am encouraging students, with permission, to bring in siddurim that they have from home to show the class. They are encouraged to do so any day before our Field Trip on Tuesday of next week. Reminder: grade 2s and 5s have been asked to sing at the grade 9 graduation this coming Monday evening.

Thursday May 10, 2012

In anticipation of Shavuot that is quickly approaching, we have been discussing in class the 10 commandments. Yesterday we read and discussed them using our Tanach.  In the next few weeks, students will be given the opportunity to create their own personal 10 commandments.
Field trip forms went home a few days ago letting parents know about a gym field trip that will be taking place on Wednesday May 30, where students will go to the JCC for a swimming afternoon.  We are looking for volunteers that are willing to be IN THE POOL.
Another upcoming field trip is our annual Synagogue Hop.  On Tuesday June 12, the grade 2 class will travel to 4 of the Calgary synagogues as part of our T'filah curriculum.  Please stay tuned for the permission forms that should be sent home any day now.  We are looking for parent volunteers to help us out on this trip.
Reminder that Friday May 18th is a half day for students.  The afternoon is a staff coordination afternoon.

Monday April 2, 2012

Hello grade two parents,
What amazing weather we are having right now.  We continued our Passover studies today in class.  Students watched a very informative video about how matzah is made in a matzah factory in New York.  Why not ask your child about some of the things they saw in the video?
*Wednesday Student Council is having another treat sale to help clean out the freezer before Passover.  All treats will be $2

Tuesday March 20, 2012

YAY !!! Today we finished the 7th day of creation in our Torah studies.  So exciting !  Ask the kids about the small gift I gave them to mark this occasion.
Today's Stampeders' visit was an amazing success.  We watched a great basketball game.  Those guys are HUGE !!!  They were doing slam dunks, and I was sure that they'd break the glass.

Monday March 19, 2012

Today we started learning the songs for our school model seder.  For those of you who have lost track of time like I have, the seder at school is on next Tuesday !!!  Oy vey, good thing the kids are excellent at learning songs.

Reminder that tomorrow is a non-uniform day.  The Calgary Stampeders will be at the CJA to play the Hawks at a game of basketball.  In honour of their visit, we are asking kids to wear Stamps colours - Red & White.

On Thursday, Student Council will be having a treat sale.  All items will be $2.  Proceeds will go to Magen David Adom and the bouldering wall that is under construction on the gym stage.

Thanks for all your support.

Thursday March 15, 2012

Thank you to everyone who supported our Pi Day fundraiser yesterday by purchasing tickets for the pie throw.  All money raised will be donated to Magen David Adom. So far we have collected just over $300.  We are still accepting donations at the office.
Reminder of tomorrow's english spelling test (with Mrs. Aucoin).
Next Tuesday is a non-uniform day.  The Calgary Stampeders are coming to play basketball against our Hawks.  In the spirit of the day we are asking students to wear Stamps colors (red & white), which happens to be the perfect colors to further support Magen David Adom.
Some boys don't have kippot in class.  Please check with your child if they are prepared for class and have the kippot that they need.

Monday March 12, 2012

I hope that everyone had a good weekend.  Students came back to class with an abundance of energy today.  There are a few things I need to discuss:
1) Tomorrow students will have a substitute (Morah Hannah I'm told), because I am away on the Junior High ski trip.
2) Wednesday is Pi Day and students are asked to bring in money to support Magen David Adom.
Students will be receiving a small pie for morning snack (supplied by Student Council).  At 3:00 we will be having a pie throwing event in the gym.  Pies cost $3.14 which will be donated to MDA.  Tickets can be purchased ahead of time during recesses.
3) Ms. Belanger and I have noticed that MANY students have overdue books from the library.  We go to the library every week and we would appreciate if students would return and sign out new books on a regular basis.
4) There are a few boys who cannot find any of their kippot at school.  For those that this is relevant to, please send more.

Monday March 5, 2012

Purim begins this Wednesday night.  We will be celebrating at school all day Thursday.
Students have created a movie telling the story of Megilat Esther.  The video will be available to watch after school on Wednesday and Thursday in room 24 (my room).  Because of privacy issues I am not able to post the video online or to give hard copies.  If you aren't able to come one of those days to view the video, please e-mail me and we'll find a time that works.  The video is only 10 min long.
Have a great day.

Monday February 27, 2012

I'm very sorry that its been so long since I last posted anything on this blog.

Thank you to everyone who joined us last Thursday evening for our Learning Fair and sharing in the Science Fair.  We appreciate all the positive feedback that came from that event.

A few students have already had the opportunity to take home Nobody.  Their projects have been unique and were well presented.  Nobody has sure been learning a lot from our grade twos and is turning into Somebody special.

Purim is only a few weeks away now (March 7th at night it will begin).  We are in full Purim mode at school getting ready for the upcoming festivities.  Ask your kids about the Purim songs we covered today.

Monday February 13, 2012

Tomorrow is a non-uniform day.  Through the bottle drive that happened earlier this month, we have fundraised in order to send Mishloach Manot to IDF soldiers.  Tomorrow we are asking students to wear their favourite Israeli t-shirt or blue and white.
Reminder = no Hebrew vocabulary test this week.
Thursday & Friday = no school (Teacher's Convention)

Thursday February 9. 2012

Sorry I haven't been blogging lately, its been a CRAZY BUSY WEEK !!!
Thank you to everyone who joined us on Tuesday afternoon for our Hagigat HaTorah.  I feel it was an amazing success, the students were unbelievable.  We have been using our Tanachim in class, learning how its organized and how to find a page.
Tanachim will be used at school during the week.  Students are able to bring them home over the weekends, as long as they are brought back for Monday morning.
Please note that I will be sending out an e-mail asking for feedback from the Hagigat HaTorah.

Monday February 6, 2012

TOMORROW IS OUR HAGIGAT HATORAH !!!
Please be in the Lecture Theatre by 2:30pm.

Hebrew Vocabulary Test tomorrow. As a treat for the students tomorrow's quiz will be a matching exercise.  Since I want to make sure that each student gets a good night sleep and to make sure they aren't stressed about the quiz I thought I'd try a new format.
Also, this will be our last quiz for a few weeks.

Tuesday January 31, 2012

Howdy,
One week until our Hagigat HaTorah.
Students as a group did much better this week on their vocabulary tests.  I have posted the new words on flashcards below.  Thank you to the parent who pointed out that I should be putting a transliterated version of the words up here so that parents who don't read Hebrew or just need a bit of help, can help their children too.  Here it is:
you (m.) = אתה [ahtah]
you (f.) = את [aht]
under = תחת [tachat]
but = אבל [ahval]
and = ...ו [veh]
helps (f.) = ...עוזרת ל [ohzeret leh]

Monday January 30, 2011

Shavuah Tov,
Reminder that tomorrow is our Hebrew Vocabulary Test #3.
Hagigat HaTorah - Tuesday February 7th
Twin Day is tomorrow - if anyone doesn't have a twin, a group of us are going to be dressing up as cowboys and cowgirls if you'd like to join us.

Wednesday January 25, 2012

Happy Rosh Chodesh,
Today the Hebrew month of Shevat begins.  For this entire Jewish month, I am asking students to bring in Tzedakah that will be donated to JNF of Calgary (Jewish National Fund).  Each day students who bring in any form of tzedakah (amount doesn't matter, the point is to give) the student will put up a leaf on our Tzedakah tree outside our class.  I have offered to students that if they'd like to bring a baggie with a few coins in it for the week I have a safe place they can keep it.
Don't forget about our Hagigat HaTorah on Tuesday February 7th from 2:30-3:30pm.
Friday is an early dismissal day (11:38 dismissal))
Twin Day is Tuesday (non-uniform)

Tuesday January 24, 2012

Today we had our second Hebrew vocabulary test. The scores this time were significantly lower than last week. Students practiced daily in class, but many did not study at home. Parents of students who did not pass the test will be receiving an e-mail from me with more information.
Next vocabulary quiz is next Tuesday. The flashcards are below:

Monday January 23, 2012

The 2B class started their Who Do You Tell sessions today. Students are asked to use their best and most serious behavior during these sessions.

Hebrew Vocabulary quiz #2 tomorrow. Students have had their words since last Wednesday and have practiced in school each day. We will continue to have Hebrew Vocabulary tests for the next few weeks, so please remember that tests are on Tuesday. If their paper flashcards have been lost, they can always practice using the words on this blog that are also accessible from the website.
If you have any questions, please e-mail me.

Last Monday of semester one !

Thursday January 19, 2012

Today the 2As started their Who Do You Tell program and will continue it tomorrow.
The 2Bs will have their sessions next Monday and Wednesday.

Please don't forget about next Tuesday's Vocabulary Test.

Wednesday January 18, 2012

Another busy day in grade two. Today we tried something new that Mr. Suissa suggested for all Hebrew classes in our school. We went to the computer lab and recorded ourselves reading a new Hebrew text. We are going to continue to go every few weeks and read. We will be able to listen to our reading improve over the year. Students are asked to focus on proper pronunciation and not be focused on speed.
Way to go grade twos!

Tuesday January 17, 2012

I am VERY impressed with the amazing results of today's vocabulary test. All of the grade twos did exceptionally. Way to go!
Next Tuesday we will be having another vocabulary test. I've made it a little more difficult but have kept it to 6 words again.
If you have not handed in your child's permission form for the Who Do You Tell program, please do ASAP.

Monday January 16, 2012

Hello everyone,
I hope everyone is being safe while outside and keeping warm and covered.
Reminder: Hebrew vocabulary test tomorrow
Tomorrow is also PJ day for United Way (we are collecting United Way donations)

Finally, you should see a blue invitation in Homework Folders inviting you to our Hagigat Hatorah (Torah Celebration) where we will be celebrating the students' formal beginning of Torah studies. The celebration will be happening from 2:30-3:30 on Tuesday February 7th. Please try to make it and invite any family that is interested in attending.

Wednesday January 11, 2012

What a busy day we had today. We took time in class to study our vocabulary words for our upcoming test Tuesday. Today we got back into our Yesh Lanu Llama workbooks. I have asked the students to keep their Yesh Lanu Llama reading books at school as they will be receiving Yesh Lanu Llama #2 to keep at home sometime this week.
A few reminders:
Thursday January 12th is the Who Do You Tell? Parents information night
-Permission forms were sent home and should be in Homework Folders, please return them ASAP
Tuesday January 17th is a non-uniform day = PJ day for United Way
-wear PJs to school and bring a $ donation for United Way
Tuesday January 31st is a Student Council Sponsored Spirit Day = Twin Day
-students are asked to buddy up with a friend and dress similarly

Monday January 9, 2012

Happy New Year !! What smiling and excited faces I saw today.  So glad to have everyone back, I hope your break was as restful as mine.
You'll notice that I have assigned our first Hebrew quiz for Tuesday January 17th.  I'm finding that I need a little bit of extra help and motivation for the students to learn necessary vocabulary words, so a quiz is what I've decided to start doing.  Tests will happen every Tuesday for the next few weeks.  Each week they will be assigned 6 Hebrew words.  Today in class we did a practice (orange paper in homework folders) so that you can see what the test will look like.  Students have prepared flash cards (in an envelope also in homework folder).  We will be preparing each day in class, but I would like them practicing at home as well.  If you have any questions, please feel free to let me know.  I'm putting the spelling list below as well, so that you can look back if need be.

These words come from our Yesh Lanu Llama book.
