I'm very proud of how well the students performed today at Latke Lunch. If you were unable to come today, or if you just can't get Moves Like Judah out of your head. I've posted it below. It will also be posted on the CJA website under Holiday celebrations.

Yiddish Weeks has continued into this week. We have been listening to Chelm stories each day. Students have enjoyed acting out Chelmite solutions to problems in groups. Don't forget that Thursday evening we are having our parent sharing night about the things we have learned during the past two weeks.
Friday December 9, 2011
Shabbat Shalom,
We have had a beautiful Yiddish filled week.
Can't wait to see what next week holds.
Thursday December 8, 2011
Thank goodness for people who share links on Facebook. The Maccabeats have just today done a remake of Mattisyahu's Miracle. Enjoy

I apologize for not blogging in a whole week. I haven't been feeling 100% and actually was home sick yesterday. I'm happy to say that I'm feeling much better.
Yiddish Weeks began on Monday and things have been going fantastically, if I may say so myself. I'm totally biased, but grade 2 has the best assignment of any grade during these two weeks. Our main focus is the stories of the "wise" people of Chelm. Ask your child what they know about the Chemlites.
Also, I know parents have been inquiring about the details of the Candle Lighting Ceremony happening at City Hall in two weeks, so I'm posting the poster that was e-mailed out with the CJA newsletter today for more information.

Yesterday a permission form was sent home about the grade 2s and 3s who have been asked to sing at the candle lighting happening at City Hall the first night of Hanukkah. Please have permission forms in by December 13th. Student have been practicing for all of our Hanukkah performances many times over the past few weeks and continue to do a great job. Have a good night.

Over the past week we have been thoroughly discussing respect. Who we show respect to, ways we show respect and why it is important to show respect. Both classes have now had the opportunity to go to the computer lab and learn from Mr. Suissa how to use the CMap program to create a concept map. The great thing about the program is how flexible it is. Students can manipulate the concept map as they see fit. I'm very excited to continue to use the program this year.
Monday November 21, 2011
Today we did Havdallah, T'filah and learned a new song for Latke Lunch. Overall, busy day.
Reminder that tomorrow is a non-uniform day. Please bring in a non-perishable donation for the Food Bank.
Thursday November 17, 2011
Today we were very lucky to have Kelly, one of our school Occupational Therapists, come in and talk to us about Superflex, a superflexible super hero who helps people be more flexible. There are a group of people called Unthinkables who sometimes try to stop us from being flexible. We learned strategies that help to defeat the Unthinkables. Check out the poster below that outlines some of the characters.
Wednesday November 16, 2011
Today we started a new project. We will be creating Hanukkah picture books depicting the story of Hanukkah.
Please make sure that students have their AGENDA and HOMEWORK FOLDERS every day of school. I apologize if this seems repetitive but there are number of students who continue to leave them at home.

Today we had a lengthy discussion about RESPECT. We discusses different ways we show respect and then acted out many scenarios. Students were very engaged and had a great time acting out the different situations. Please check out the bulletin board outside my room to see the work they completed today regarding our topic of respect.
The snow has arrived ! PLEASE make sure that your child has mitts, a toque and coat EVERY DAY along with a pair of boots for outside. We have seen too many frozen fingers.

Today we did Havdallah for the first time in class. Havdallah is the ceremony performed at the end of Shabbat. In class we discussed when Shabbat ends and begins and what clues we have in the sky that help us. If you want to learn more about Havdallah follow this link to the Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Havdalah

We have continued working on our Yesh Lanu Llama reading comprehension books. Another reminder that the reading books MUST be in their Homework Folders each day.
In Jewish Buddy time this week the grade 2s played games that the grade 3s prepared using their Hebrew vocabulary words. Grade two students were very excited and engaged.
In case your child hasn't told you, we are one of the classes presenting at Latke Lunch this coming December. Latke Lunch will be taking place on Tuesday Dec 20th. If possible, please plan your winter vacation so that you will be in town and able to join us for the celebration.
Monday October 31, 2011
I can't believe I saw snow this morning !!! Almost winter. 2Bs worked in their Yesh Lanu Llama workbooks and 2As were busy in the computer lab on Rosetta Stone. Remember that we are in the middle of our magazine subscription fundraiser. Our first draw will be tomorrow morning (Tuesday) where we will have the draw for the crazy light up glasses. Good luck to everyone who has sold magazines and is entered in the draw.

Thank you to everyone for your cooperation this week in our temporary room. Room 24 is now finished being painted and it is ready for us to be back in it on Monday. It looks great ! A BIG thank you to Mr. Napier and his team for doing such a fantastic job.
Please make sure that your child has their Yesh Lanu Llama book in their Homework Folders EVERY DAY ! We have been using it daily in class, and I wan them to continue reading at home. I would like every student to have at least one star on the Hebrew reading chart in my room by Winter Break (60 min = 1 star).
Enjoy your weekend.

Thank you to all parents who came to Parent-Teacher Conferences this past Monday and Tuesday.
Because our room is being painted, until further notice the grade 2 Hebrew classroom will be room 22 (next door).
Today we began our Yesh Lanu Llama reading comprehension books. We are taking a close look at vocabulary words and creating our own dictionaries in class. Students need to remember to have their Yesh Lanu Llama Reading books in their Homework folder every day. Continue reading them at home, but we will need them to complete our workbooks.
Here is what the book looks like, in case you have forgotten:

In case you haven't heard, today we launched the Magazine Subscription fundraiser. Students took home an information package that hopefully answers a few questions. Money raised goes to Student Council who then decides where they would like to use the money. The `09-`10 Student Council decided to purchase new Volleyball uniforms with the money. The `10-`11 Student Council donated money towards the building of the new playground.
Tonight begins the holiday of Shmini Atzeret where we ask G-d to ensure that Israel gets the rain it needs this coming winter season. Tomorrow night Simchat Torah will begin. We are excited to end and immediately restart the cycle of the reading of the Torah. Because of the holidays, there is no school this Thursday and Friday.
Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on Monday and Tuesday at school (no classes).
It will be a whole week until I see my grade 2s again :(

We had a fantastic time at our field trip today. We were privileged to meet the author and illustrator of the Franklin series of books. They shared how Franklin came to be and all about their careers. Students who brought books with them, were able to have them autographed. Very exciting. We also had the two copies that the CJA library has of the Franklin books in Hebrew autographed. Wishing everyone a Chag Sameach as Sukkot begins tonight. Don't forget, Monday is individual Picture Day.
Sukkot & Simchat Torah videos
I just found a varitey of great short clips all about Sukkot and Simchat Torah on the Chabad.org website.

Hi everyone,
I hope you all had a meaningful Yom Kippur and an excellent Canadian Thanksgiving. I want to remind you that our field trip to Wordfest is tomorrow. Please make sure the students are wearing their fomal uniform. Since we won't be at school during our normal snack time, we will be bringing snacks with us. Please pack snacks that are labelled with the student's name (eg. if you are packing an apple for snack, please put it in a baggie and write your child's name on it). This will make the entire process easier. We are being picked up by the bus at 9:00 sharp, so make sure that everyone is on time tomorrow.
Have a good night.

Today students took home their first Hebrew textbook called יש לנו למה (Yesh Lanu Llama = We have a Llama). Students should be feeling excited about the book, it is at their level. Please keep the book in their homework folders so that we can use it at school and they continue recording Hebrew reading minutes at home. After Sukkot, we will be using this book to complete the Yesh Lanu Llama reading comprehension book. Students will gain confidence in their reading abilities through repeated readings of the book. Please take care of the books and continue reading !
Tuesday October 4, 2011
Today at dinner ask your child what they did today (2B) yesterday (2A) with a rubber chicken. Also check out the pictures we drew that are hanging outside room 24 of us doing Kaparot.

Ok, so I am a huge fan of the New York based accapella group from Yeshiva University called Maccabeats. Thank you to my former students who told me about this today. I'm pleased to share it will all of you. גמר חתימה טובה May you be inscribed in the Book of Life.

Hi everyone,
It has been a few days since my last post, sorry about that, things got very busy. Today students received their Homework Folders which they personalized with a picture they colored of SpongeBob. Hopefully the use of these Homework Folders will keep us all more organized. Please ensure, just like agendas, that Homework Folders go home and come to school EVERY DAY.
Also sent home today were our field trip permission forms, due back to school by Oct. 4. You should find them in your child's new Homework Folder (hopefully).
Also, Chabad has been very generous and has given each student a magazine for the Hebrew month of Tishrei. Thank you Chabad of Calgary!

A BIG THANK YOU to all of our vollunteers who came up to support us during our Terry Fox run today. We as a school raised over $1000 and the number is still growing. Josh in grade 5 shaved is head in front of the whole school at the end of the day. Our grade 2s did their very best on the run and Mrs. Aucoin and I are so proud of them. I don't know about the kids, but I'm ready for a nap.

Sorry everyone for the late posting tonight. I was at a meeting at which someone brought up a very cool event that is happening this coming May. Israel will be hosting its first annual DRAGON BOAT RACE !!! How amazing is that. I know nothing about dragon boat racing but the whole idea sounds phenomenal. Calgary is hoping to send a team from Calgary. This Wednesday there will be an info session at the JCC at 5:30pm. Check it out.
Reminder that our Terry Fox Run is tomorrow. It is a non-uniform day so students should wear appropriate clothing for the Run. Please pack a water bottle, hat, and proper running shoes.

Hello everyone,
Today was a very busy day in grade two. We continued learning Hebrew script letters. Today we did chaf sofit, lamed, mem and mem sofit. Students were given the opportunity to take home homework for parents who did not attend last night's Curriculum Night. Instructions are simple: draw yourself and send it back to school. We are making a display of the people in our community, and of course you parents are a part of our fantastic Division 1 community at the CJA. Both classes have been to the library already this week and took out Hebrew books so don't forget to keep reading!

I hope everyone had a enjoyable and relaxing weekend. Today was a busy day. We spent the first hour with all of grade two together. We created our Class Agreement. Ask your child about some of the expectations and rules we have in our grade.
Two important things went home today:
1) A Curriculum Night invitation - (tomorrow night)
2) Scholastic Orders - due Sep 26 (hand in to Miss Sherman)

Today in grade two we did weekday t'filot for the first time. Students were excited to recognize some tunes and were intrigued by tunes they had never heard before. Today we wrote in agendas about the upcoming Terry Fox run at school (sep. 20). Students are asked to bring in TOONIES for TERRY every day until the run. Please help us reach our goal by donating to this worthy cause.

Another great day in grade 2 !
Today we started reviewing our Hebrew reading skills. Students have homework to read from their black duotang for at least 10 min tonight. Be sure to read the letters that were sent home about the reading program. These 10 min that are homework definitely count towards Hebrew reading minutes.
Tonight at dinner ask your students about what Hebrew script letters they learned. Have a good night.

Hi parents,
If you've checked your child's agenda, you will see that they have written down that they will need headphones at school. This year students will be using both Successmaker (AB curriculum) and Rosetta Stone (Hebrew) in the computer lab. I want to clarify the type of headphones they need. They do not need to have a headset with a microphone attached. I have microphones they can use. Any headphones (over the head or earbud) are acceptable. If you have any questions, let me know. Enjoy the rest of your long weekend.

WELCOME DAY !!!
Today sure went quickly. We had a bit of a crazy schedule.
We had some class time, grade time, division 1 time, and school time. So, I guess a bit of everything.
Tonight's dinner topic is community. Ask your student what communities they belong to. Also ask them about the 2 crafts that we did today (one as a division and one as a school)
